Tuesday Talk-- Keto Diet

Hi all! I am so happy to be joining up with Erika and Ashley for Tuesday Talk today because I am DYING to know your thoughts on today's topic: the Keto diet.

I'm laughing because I am POSITIVE this was my same face when I started hearing the "rules" of Keto!

About a year and a half ago Devin and I watched the Netflix documentary "The Magic Pill" after hearing so much about Keto. After watching the documentary we were even more intrigued, so we read a few articles and did a little more research and ended up coming to the conclusion that it just wasn't for us. We were wanting to eat healthier, but wanted something that felt more sustainable long term. Fast forward to now. I'm still not convinced it's a good permanent solution, but may be something worth trying for one month.

I definitely want to clarify my reasons for wanting to try it, because I think most people look at Keto as a "fast weight loss" solution, and that's not what I'm interested in at this time. I have been having a difficult time getting my postpartum hormones to regulate back to normal levels and one of the side effects of Keto is hormone regulation. After talking to my OB about it, she said I could try going on birth control to see if it regulates the hormones, but I would like to try and see if I could do this without having to take a pill every day. I'm one of those people that tries not to take medicine if I don't have to.

I'm dying to know if any of you have tried Keto and what your thoughts are! It doesn't matter to me if you tried it for a medical reason or for weight loss, I'm just want your two cents!

Here are my questions:
- Is it hard to plan/prep/make recipes?
- Did you experience the "Keto Flu" when your body initially went into ketosis?
- If you go off of the diet for a few days, do you have any side effects?
- Do you think it is realistic long term, or do you only do it for a short period of time?

And most importantly (at least to me):
- If you have done this diet in the past but then went off of it, did you have any negative side effects? My concern is that I will do this, it'll regulate my hormones, but then once I'm ready to go off of it I'm afraid my hormones will just get all out of whack again.

Thank you guys in advance for your input!! I can't wait to see what ya'll think!

  1. We did it for a lomg while but i decided to transition out of it after about 18 months. It was too hard with the back and forth especially going out. It did make us eat more low carb overall though and eliminate a lot kf flours and gluten. We did get the keto flu . Meals do take more work but we loved it for the results we saw!

    1. Hmm... so everything you're saying is what I was afraid of! More work, hard when going out to eat, keto flu.... maybe I need to look into another option. Thank you SO much for your input!

  3. I did a low carb diet, but not no carb, and it worked well for me!

  4. I tried it and didn't feel good on it at all. I find that acupuncture does a better job at regulating my hormones (I was one of those people who didn't think acupuncture could possibly work, but I'm a believer now).

  5. I don't think I'd ever do it just because your body needs carbs still to be healthy and balanced. It's definitely not the right long-term solution at least! People seem to have some success in the short term to lose weight but I don't know much else. It sounds like, from the research I've done, it's not overly safe to have a lot of fats and few carbs (especially because you're cutting out a lot of healthy foods!) in the long term.

    1. I know, that's why we decided not to do it when we researched it the first time. I'm thinking I should keep looking at alternative options

  6. I do low-carb and it is wonderful. Both a nutritionist and a physician strongly advises against KETO. It is not healthy for long term because our bodies are designed to need healthy carbs. Low carb is much easier to plan and prep for as well as no "bad" side effects when you go off except for just not feeling well when putting "junk" into your body.

    1. Okay then, I think it's official. No keto for me!! I'll talk with my OB again about the pill and then look into other options for hormone regulation as well. Thank you for your input!!
