Getting Our Garden Prepped and Ready!

Good morning and happy Friday! Today I am giving you a snapshot into what our weekend is going to look like. We have a plans over the next few days to turn a corner section of our backyard into our new vegetable garden and I could not be more excited about it!

I put together a little drawing of what our backyard currently looks like, but then added our new garden beds in the upper left corner. In case you want to try making one of your own backyard, I found this free garden planner here.

I am embarrassed to admit how much fun I had whipping up this little rendering of our backyard 😊.

Anyway, so in years past we have always kept our vegetable garden beds behind our fence. It sounds weird to do that, but it kept the lawn area big and open for the kids to play on, and we still had access to the property behind our fence. We technically own it, but due to an easement on the property with Duke Energy, we are unable to build/put anything major on that little slice of land. So we thought garden beds would be perfect... and they were perfect there, until we had two kids and life got crazy busy. Then the garden beds became "out of sight, out of mind" and ended up getting overgrown with weeds and not taken care of nearly as much as they should've been. Our plan is to put the garden beds tucked into the corner so I can weed/garden while the kids are blowing bubbles/playing on their slide/playing in the baby pool, etc.

Our plan is to purchase two new beds from Gardner's Supply Co. this year, and then two more next year. We are easing ourselves back into being the full on gardeners we used to be 😉. These are the beds we are purchasing:

As you can see in the last picture, they have rubber mulch mats laid in between the beds to help combat weeds surrounding the beds. We plan to grab a few rolls of the rubber mulch to lay in between the beds, just like in the picture.

As far as what we plan to plant this year, we are going to stick with what we know. We have always had a lot of luck growing zucchini, summer squash, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Since we are easing back into our full blown gardening, we are going to stick with plants we know are easy and low maintenance.

Once we get it all up and running I will be sure to post pics! Are any of you big gardeners?? If so, please tell me about what you plant! I'd love to know! And you know what would be even better? If you had a post about your garden and left a link to it in the comments 😀

Today I am linking up with Erika and Andrea for Friday Favorites. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!!

    1. Good idea to save it! It's fun to just play around on too, even if you don't have a yard!

  2. We are not good at keeping things alive (well, our kids are still fine, haha, but plants, no), but I have always loved growing herbs, and now I'd like to do some kale and other greens. They can be expensive to buy and usually you only need a leaf or two. Our backyard is too sandy to grow most things, but I'll try out some pots I think.

    1. That's a great idea! We grow kale in our school garden and the kids love to make smoothies out of it. I'm pretty sure it's the only time most of the willingly eat kale :)
