Good morning friends and happy Monday! Over the past two years I have said several times that I would tell you my whole spiel about why I left the world of iPhone/Apple products and switched to Droid, but have never gotten around to it. Well, if you read my post last Friday you may have noticed that I got a new phone case and screen protector... for an iPhone 11 Pro. So... I switched back. 😬 Let's talk about why, shall we?
So wayyyy back in 2009 I bought my first iPhone... and I LOVED it. I won't lie to you, I was that total Apple geek who was all "All Apple products are the greatest ever!" and put my apple stickers on everything. Yes, I know. #Nerd. But whatever, I was hooked. The iPhone was still relatively new and at the time there was nothing else like it. I had had a Blackberry before the iPhone, but the iPhone was different. Until...
One day my phone ran a forced automatic update to the newest software and several of the apps stopped working. I was frustrated but took it to the Apple store and explained what happened, hopeful that they could reverse the update. The Apple employees told me they could not reverse the update, they were sorry for the inconvenience, and because Apple forced the update without my approval, they would replace my phone for free. What?! Free?! Yes. I walked into the Apple store with a phone that didn't work due to the update, and out of the store with a brand new iPhone... because Apple was claiming responsibility for making the phone obsolete. I thought that was excellent customer service and I would be an Apple customer for life.
Fast forward about a year, and the EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED. Mandatory update, phone no longer worked well. I went to the store again, and Apple replaced my phone again, for free, because they acknowledged that it was their software that ruined the phone. Again I thought "that was annoying, but at least they fixed it. Good customer service!". Until about a year later when my iPad (first generation) did the same thing. I took it to the Apple store, ready for the whole "we are sorry but we will replace it" drill, except they didn't. The response was, "yes we forced the update, but we will not replace it. You can buy a new one". I was SUPER annoyed. The iPad was in perfect condition, but was made obsolete because of a software issue on their end? I didn't end up replacing it because I was afraid of buying a new one just for it to become "outdated" again.
My first generation iPad. It only has 1 app that still works on it, a white noise machine app. Devin refers to this iPad as "the worlds most expensive white noise machine" 😂
Fast forward another year or so and this same thing happened again with my next iPhone. I took it to the store, they told me I could buy a new phone. I was annoyed and decided I would buy another phone.. but it wasn't going to be an iPhone.
You may or may not remember but a couple years ago Apple ended up getting sued for exactly this... intentionally making older models of their phones obsolete right around the time their new phones were released, in order to drive up sales of their new phones. In some cases it was slowing down the battery and in other cases it was through software updates. They admitted fault and had to pay a $500 million dollar settlement.
The switch from iPhone to Droid was a struggle! Not all my photos, contacts or apps would transfer over because they run on different softwares. But once I got all the kinks worked out, I learned to like it. For the past 2.5ish years Devin and I had been on the Google Fi service (we had previously been on Verizon) because it worked best for Devin traveling internationally. While I loved the Google Pixel 2 phone I had, the service was starting to give me some trouble. I decided to switch back over to Verizon, and it just so happened that Verizon was doing a "Buy One Get One Free" on iPhone 11 Pro's. My mom wanted a new phone, and I would need a new one too. I figured since the lawsuit Apple would hopefully not be up to any more fishy business with updates and figured it was worth a shot. Hopefully I don't regret that decision!
So now I am back in iPhone territory and the new iOS software is SO different from what I was used to a few years ago! I am still learning through making mistakes all the time 😊 The thing that has me the most excited though is the camera. The camera on this thing is incredible! It is much easier to use than the DSLR camera I've been trying to master all summer. I have a feeling the DSLR is about to start collecting dust here pretty soon... so much for all that effort trying to learn how to use it! 😅
I know several of you have told me you have switched to a non-iPhone at some point over the years. Tell me, what was your reason for switching?
I wasn't aware of this issue with updates, what a pain for you to have to go through. Hopefully, they have discontinued that practice? I bought a Motorola phone for work because I have to remove the camera and the Moto g7 play was the cheapest phone that had smartphone capability. I still prefer my iPhone.
ReplyDeleteIt was very frustrating!! Especially because I was a young, single teacher making hardly any money. Buying a new phone every year wasn’t in my budget!
DeleteI never had an issue with installing the updates and I've been an iphone customer since 2011. What apps were you using that stopped working? I am definitely an iphone user for life and have been willing to put up with the increasingly bad battery life, but my work now pays for my phone so that helps ;) My question is whether I want an Apple Watch.
ReplyDeleteHow nice that work pays for yours!! I was a single teacher and not making any money, so I tried to hold onto the older models of phones, or buy the cheapest (and therefore oldest) models available. Then the updates would only be for “newer” models and most of the apps would stop working! I have several friends who love their Apple Watch!
DeleteI get it, yes, I know what you mean now. Apple is tricky, as proven by the lawsuit!
DeleteThat's just crazy about the software updates. I have heard of that happening, but it didn't happen to me. I do know that we have several old iphones in "storage" that just won't work anymore because the software updated to more than they could handle. My kids have the 11 and the camera IS incredible! Thanks for linking up with Hello Monday! Tanya - The Other Side of the Road
ReplyDeleteSounds like your old storage phones and my phones were alike!
DeleteI completely gave up on my DSLR camera once Apple started making awesome cameras. It's so much easier to just use my phone, throw on a filter from light room, and post it to Instagram in just a couple minutes.
ReplyDeleteAgreed! It’s so much easier, and the quality of the pictures is phenomenal
DeleteWelcome back to the Apple world. So sorry to hear about your whole ordeal. I do remember the lawsuit. Hope things go better for you this time around! xo
ReplyDeleteThanks Kelly!!
DeleteI've never stopped with Apple. even after the annoying update slow downs LOL iPhones are so much easier to use haha!
ReplyDeleteThey really are!
