Embrace the Hygge

Good morning friends! I recently read a book called The Cozy Life, which is all about the concept of hygge. In case you aren't familiar, hygge is the Danish and Norwegian word that more or less means coziness, comfort, warmth and an overall feeling of content. I have a feeling we are going to be spending a lot more time than usual within the 4 walls of our homes this winter, so it might be time to start working on ways to embrace it. I know we are all feeling the fatigue of our lives being turned upside down, but I'm trying my best to stay positive and find the hidden blessings within the awfulness that has been 2020. If I have to be cooped up inside, I might as well attempt to have fun with it and make it as positive an experience as possible. Meaning bring on the hygge!

First and foremost, if you haven't read the book I strongly recommend it. It's a quick and easy read that will make you feel warm and cozy just by reading it. I also read this book years ago, which is another fast read about how to make your life feel a little more hygge-like.

Here are a couple takeaways from these two books on how to get a little more hygge in your life:

1. Soft Lighting-- I am a big fan of candles. Not only do they smell amazing, but that soft flicker of the flame is soothing and relaxing. As I write this I currently have Bath & Body Works 'Tis the Season candle lit and the entire house smells like a wintry heaven. You all know how much I love our wood burning fireplace too-- it's one of my favorite things about our house! Besides those things, you can try dimming your lights, using lamps instead of overhead lighting, or even the glow of your Christmas tree or fairy lights.

2. Cozy Textures-- This can mean fuzzy slippers, a jumbo knit blanket, an oversized soft sweater (my favorite one is here!), or a big fluffy pillow. Anything that just feels soft and warm on your skin is all you need!

3. Warm Drinks & Tasty Snacks-- One of my favorite winter activities is to pop a big bowl of popcorn, make some hot chocolate (or let's be real-- a glass of red wine), and watch a classic movie. We've even made pillow forts for the kids during the day and then kept them up to watch a movie in at night. A pillow fort can be fun  even as an adult! And it's definitely cozy! We also love to bake cookies during the holiday season or make homemade peppermint bark.

4. Turn Off Electronics-- Devin and I try to do this several times a week-- we put the kids to bed and then find something to do other than watch tv. It may mean staying up and talking, or doing a jigsaw puzzle, playing a board game, or even just reading our books next to each other all cozied up on the couch.

5. Spend Time with Loved Ones-- I know this is much easier said than done right now, because we want to make sure we are keeping our loved ones safe. Thank God for FaceTime/Zoom. We regularly call our loved ones via FaceTime-- I'd say we probably do 2-3 FaceTimes a day with family and friends. We have had multiple Zoom game nights with friends and while it isn't the same as seeing them in person, it's definitely better than nothing. We have one friend who hosts a weekly Zoom trivia, and then sometimes we will play other games like Farkle or games from Jackbox

Now if anybody needs me I will be making a big ol cup of hot chocolate.. with some extra marshmallows 😊 What are your favorite cozy winter activities??

  2. I read a few hygge books last winter (or maybe it was the winter before?) and just love that concept! Even though I still struggle to embrace winter.
