Book Club- September

Epic Reads Charts for Book Nerds
Haha, so true, right?

It is time for my monthly write up about the books I read. This month I read 3 nonfiction books and 1 fiction. I like to alternate from fiction to nonfiction because I get so connected to story lines in novels and have a hard time moving on to the next novel without having fully "processed" the last one. Anyone else out there like that?

These are the books I read:
The Honest Life- This is Jessica Alba's book about why she created the Honest Company (which I love) and about the importance of trying to go organic as often as possible. I totally used to be one of those people who thought "Oh, well I ate that growing up and I turned out fine" but this book really opened my eyes to how many new chemicals have been created since the 80's/90's and how little we know about them. I love that she openly admits it isn't always realistic to go organic all the time, and she has several charts of which foods it is important to buy organic because of the pesticides/hormones/antibiotics and which foods don't matter quite as much.

Salt to the Sea- This book is a Young Adult novel, but I had heard so many great things about it that I had to give it a try... so happy I did! I flew through this book in a day and a half, I could not put it down. The storyline is about people who lived between Germany and Russia towards the end of WW2 as the Russians are advancing towards them. The people are trying to evacuate but are unsure who to trust; the Germans don't want them and might kill them and the Russians don't care about them and might kill them. I was completely gripped by this story and had to keep reading to find out what would happen to the characters. I highly recommend this book!
Simplicity Parenting- Oh my goodness I LOVED this book! As a teacher I can attest to the fact that we have seen an increase in kids with anxiety and symptoms that look like attention disorders. This book discusses the way today's society is causing these issues in some kids by giving them too much stuff, too many choices and moving at too fast of a pace. The book talks about how these things can negatively effect children. I did not buy into everything he said in the book, but I definitely took some bits and pieces of the things I recognized in our own family and made some changes. If you are a parent, this is definitely worth checking out.

Nikon D3300 for Dummies- I told ya'll I was determined to figure our camera out and I am NOT giving up!! I actually feel like this book was VERY helpful because I could go at my own pace. I have taken one photography class but to be honest it was way too much information crammed into one session and it was overwhelming. With this book I could take it one chapter at a time, practice what was discussed in the chapter, and then move on when I felt comfortable with it. I have never read any of the "Dummies" books before but this made it so simple and stress-free that I may have to look into it again in the future!

So those are my 4 for the month. What are ya'll reading?? Leave a comment below to recommend something. I love adding new books to my list!!

  1. I'm so impressed you read 4 books in a month! I've put Salt to the Sea on my wish list. You've inspired me to put my camera book on my reading list. I know my camera can do so much more than I'm using it for.
