How I... Hygge (That Perfect Cozy Feeling)

Good Morning! A couple weeks ago on our flight to Amsterdam I read The Little Book of Hygge and it got me SO ready for fall! For those of you that aren't familiar hygge (pronounced hoo-ga) is a word used by the Danish to describe all things cozy and what causes the cozy feeling. It has me so excited for the weather to cool down (which it finally is thank God!). I can't wait to cuddle up with a blanket, a fire, and a mug of hot chocolate. These are some of things we already do around our house to help give it that hygge feeling:

1. Blankets EVERYWHERE! Devin always runs hot and I always run cold, so when we have the AC turned down to what feels like Arctic temps, I love being able to grab a soft, cozy blanket to throw over myself. We usually have at least 3 either on the back of our couch or within reach, one at the end of the bed, and another one on our couch in our upstairs living room (our house has a weird layout, one day I'll post about this). We have these super soft ones in multiple colors and then several similar to this one too.

2. Candles in (almost) every room. I am a BIG candle lover! Something about the warm glow and the smells just make me so happy. My favorites are from Bath & Body Works. We always have candles in:
- our bathrooms, including guest bathrooms (and always have them lit at parties)
- all bedrooms (except Lily Grace's)
- the kitchen
- our den
- our office
- near the fireplace
This picture is from years ago, notice the "bride" wine glass :)
3. Our wood burning fireplace. The reaction we get from most people when they hear that we have a wood burning fireplace is "Why don't you convert it? Isn't it so much work?" and my answer is always: Yes, it is more work to light a fire in it, but nothing can top that smell and sound of wood crackling in the fireplace on a cold night.  One of the things on our list when we were looking for a house was a working fireplace, and I am SO happy we found one! They can be kinda hard to come by in the South. During the winter months Dev and I will sit down here and have some hot chocolate/wine/snacks and read books together, play board games, do puzzles, etc. I know it sounds super cheesy, but I love it!
Ours was a Christmas gift from our parents, so I'm not sure this one is the exact same one, but it looks reeeeeally close.
4. Our outside firepit. This firepit uses a propane tank and is obviously MUCH easier to light than our wood burning fireplace, but it does feel like its missing a certain ambiance. That being said, we can turn the thing on in seconds so it is definitely more convenient. During the fall and spring we often have friends over on Friday nights and host a "Firepit Friday". It is a super laid back, easy way to get everybody together to just hang out. I will do a post in the next few weeks about a Firepit Friday to explain more!

So that's how we make our home feel nice and cozy in the cooler months. What about you??
