10 Favorite Spooky/Thriller Books for Halloween-- Adult Version!

Hi there! On Monday I posted some of our favorite Halloween books for kids and it got me to thinking that maybe some of us adults would like to read a creepy/chilling/thriller type of book this time of year too! I don't know of many Halloween themed books for adults (unless you count the super famous teenage vampire series we all read but pretend we didn't 😂), but I do know some good books that'll give you that chilled-to-the-bone feeling! I don't want to give too many details and give anything away, so I just gave a brief reason why I loved it. If you're looking for something a little on the creepy side to pick up and read, have a look at these suggestions!

Rebecca-- I know this one is old school, but it is one of my favorite books ever! I read this for the first time in 8th grade for my Language Arts class and I remember I couldn't stop reading at just the assigned chapters. We got to watch the movie in class after we read the book and I loved it! I have tried so hard to get Devin on board with loving it too, but he is not an old movie person. I just saw that Netflix remade the movie though so I have a feeling I know what we are watching this week!!

Behind Closed Doors-- Oh man, this one is VERY disturbing. This is one of those books where certain scenes have stayed with me even though I read this years ago.  This book is a psychological thriller so twisted I remember thinking to myself "you know, you don't HAVE to finish this..." but I did, thank goodness because while it is very dark, it's also very well written!

The Good Girl-- Mary Kubica is my favorite author for the suspense/thriller genre because her books are gripping page-turners, but they aren't so psychologically disturbing that you'll lose sleep at night. Just my kinda book 😊. This one has a shocking twist at the end that I did NOT see coming! I guarantee you'll love it.

The Other Mrs.-- This is another Mary Kubica book I love. This one also fits the bill of suspenseful without making you question whether everyone you know is a secret sociopath (like some other books on this list-- ahem, Behind Closed Doors, ahem). This is one of those books that will make you double check that your doors are locked when you leave the house. 😉

Don't You Cry-- My last Mary Kubica book for this list, this one will keep you guessing what the twist is until the very end. If you love the thriller genre, I can't stress enough that you should add Mary Kubica's books to your list!

An Anonymous Girl-- This one I just read within the past few months and loved it! This is one that makes you questions just how far you would go if you were desperate for money. Exactly where would you draw the line?

Lock Every Door-- I am in a Facebook book club called Read Between the Lines and this was one of our books several months ago-- it was great! I did not see the twist coming!

The Sundown Motel-- This was another book from the Read Between the Wines book club that I LOVED! This one is probably the most "Halloween" of the bunch because there are ghosts who haunt the motel. If you haven't read this one yet, there's no time like now!

The Woman in Cabin 10-- I know this was a super popular book from just a few years ago so most of you have probably read it, but if you haven't, add it to your list!!

The Couple Next Door-- Okay this one made me never want to leave our children at home without us. A couple leaves their baby at home and goes to a dinner party next door, and they go back to check on her and she's gone. I remember reading it and drawing similarities to the Madeleine McCann mystery.

Are there any thrillers you've loved that aren't on this list?? Please tell me in the comments below! We still have time to squeeze another book in before Halloween and I'd love for it to be a new thriller!

See you all back here tomorrow for a healthy breakfast recipe!

  2. Ooh, thanks, I like books like this. I read The Couple Next Door and also thought of Madeline McCann. Did you see that they have actually found out who took her?!

    1. I love this genre too! I did see that, so sad but I guess it's good that they know what happened and can move forward. That story is just so sad :(
