15 Favorite Halloween Books for Young Kids

Good morning friends and happy Monday! We had some big plans to go up to Blowing Rock and the Blue Ridge Mountains this weekend to peep some leaves but then 2/4 of our family ended up with head colds ('tis the season!) so we decided to sleep in our own beds for a few days instead. We stopped by our house Sunday to check the renovation progress and then drove around the nearby neighborhoods looking at some fun Halloween decorations. This one was a favorite by far-- they had EVERYTHING! Witches, pumpkins, skeletons, spiders, etc. We were stopped in front of this house for like 10 minutes oohhhing and aaaahing. 😀

I hope your weekends were wonderful as well!

So you all know how much I love to get in the festive spirit for any fun holiday (as do most of you!). We bring out all the festive crafts, the festive outfits, the baking, the movies, but especially the books! I posted back in early September that I pulled a bunch of the kids' Halloween books out of storage in the attic and several of you asked me what some of my favorite Halloween books for kids were.

As an elementary school teacher for 11 years with a Master's Degree in Literacy Education, I know a thing or two about children's books! These are the books that my children tend to like based on their age level/interest, but honestly, there is no such thing as a "bad" book as long as your child is interested in it and it brings forward his/her love of reading. My kids are in the phase of loving books they can sing along to/follow a rhythm or lift the flap books. They LOVE some lift the flaps! So these are 15 of our favorite Halloween books-- I'd love to know if your kids have read these too!

Snowmen at Halloween- I love the Snowmen series! I think its such a cute concept to see what a snowman is up to at night.

Little People Halloween Lift the Flap-- This one has a bunch of lift the flaps

Spooky Pookie -- Sandra Boynton is such a funny author and Spooky Pookie is like all her others-- it doesn't disappoint!

The Berenstain Bears Trick or Treat-- I remember reading these growing up and loving all of them! I love getting to read them with my children too.

Room on the Broom-- this one is adorable! There is a short movie on Netlifx that is super cute too.

There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat-- We have the whole "there was an old lady" series-- my kids especially love when I sing them!

Arthur's Halloween-- This one is a classic-- I remember reading this one growing up too!

Clifford's Halloween-- Another I remember reading growing up and am happy to read with my kids now.

Peppa's Giant Pumpkin-- LG went through a big Peppa phase and we have a zillion Peppa books. This one is so cute because it's a board book in the shape of a pumpkin.

Peppa's Halloween Party-- Another Peppa for our big Peppa fan.

Berenstain Bears and the Haunted House-- This one is another cute lift the flap!

Pete the Cat 5 Little Pumpkins-- This one is an updated rendition of a classic kids song-- my kids love to sing/listen to this one too!

Pete the Cat Trick or Treat-- Pete the Cat AND a lift the flap, it's a win/win!

Little Blue Truck's Halloween-- Have I mentioned we love lift the flaps yet? 😂

Mickey's Halloween-- Oh hey look, another lift the flap 😆

These are some of our favorite books that we've been reading for years-- even before I had my own kids I had several of these books in my kindergarten classroom! If you have a young child at home, try checking your local library or bookstore and seeing if they have some of these. If you've ready any of them with your kiddos, let me know which ones! I love knowing that you all are doing some of the same things I am 😊

I hope you have a great day. See you back here on Wednesday!

  1. We have a couple of these, although I find it hard to read Clifford when he's dressed as an Indian, I change it now to say "Indigenous Person" but I still cringe.
We love Little Blue Truck so I'll have to find the Halloween one.
    Thanks!
