Our Favorite Homemade PlayDough Recipe

Good morning friends! Last week I was making play-dough for Lily Grace's preschool class and it hit me that we make this same play-dough recipe all the time and I have yet to share it.

As you know, we play with a LOT of play-dough around here! It is such a good activity for young kids for such a variety of reasons, including:

- First and foremost, it's fun 😀

- A great fine motor activity! Playing with play-dough helps to strengthen those little hand and finger muscles.

- Great for creative/imaginative play. Lily Grace has made animals, shapes, a castle, tower, jewelry, etc.

- Like all art, it's calming!

We have bought the store made play-dough in the past but have found that it dries out/gets crumblier MUCH faster than our homemade recipe. I know I'm not alone in the fact that cleaning up play-dough crumbles sounds like an activity I would rather not do. I used to avoid pulling it out simply because I didn't feel like cleaning it up afterwards. But now that we've been making our own homemade, it's MUCH easier to clean and we play with it several times a week. It also helps that we try to take the art table out onto the back porch whenever possible, and then whatever little bits and pieces do fall off the table I just blow away with the leaf blower. 😊

Here is the recipe:

- 1 cup of flour

- 1 cup of water

- 1/2 cup of salt

- 2 teaspoons cream of tartar

- 2 teaspoons olive oil

- food coloring, 10-12 drops

Add all ingredients to a medium pot and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. There will be a point where you're looking at it and thinking "there's no way this is going to work", but stick with it!! I promise it will turn out! Keep stirring until mixture is no longer wet. Remove play-dough from heat and allow to cool. Store in a large ziplock bag or an airtight container.

Here are some of our favorite play-dough toys:

I bought something similar to this kit years ago when I was teaching kindergarten. The kids loved the variety of the animals and shapes.

We also love these cutting/rolling tools.

And then this kit is one of Lily Grace's favorites because she can "make spaghetti" with the turtle (in the first pic at the top!). She also loves the little lobster scissors, the bucket and shovel and the clamshell fish cut out.

Thanks for reading along today! See you back here tomorrow for another healthy recipe!

  1. I hate Play-Doh, even though the kids love it. I don't like cleaning it up either or that the colours get mixed. But if I made a batch of one colour, then maybe this would be okay...Thanks!

    1. I agree!! The mixing of colors kills me. I only make one big batch at a time and use one color.

    1. Haha while this is technically edible since it's all baking ingredients, she might taste it and spit it right back out! It's definitely not tasty!
