Our Experience With Modsy Online Interior Decorating

Hey there friends! Happy Friday! Today is the day we were supposed to be cleared to move back into our home-- but it got pushed back another week, ugh! After 5 months of renovations we are SO excited to get to move back home. Back in September we began our major renovation, and as we were getting closer to moving back in Devin and I were trying to figure out how to use the furniture we previously had in our new space. We knew we needed to buy some new furniture, but wanted to try to use what we had wherever possible. We kept going over the layout in our heads and kept getting frustrated trying to make it work. Luckily I have a wonderful friend, Kathleen, who had recently used the website Modsy to help redecorate her home office and master bedroom. She suggested we give Modsy a try and I am SO happy we did!

The way Modsy works is that you fill out an online style quiz so that your decorator understands your sense of style. Then take 10 or more pictures of your room and upload them to your dashboard on the website. You'll need to include the measurements of the room and if you have any pieces of furniture you want them to work into the space.

Here is one of our "before" pictures, mid-renovation.

Your decorator will schedule a phone call with you in order to talk about what your goals are for the room you're having them design. I told our decorator, Katie, that we are an outdoorsy family of young kids. We love to go hiking together, kayaking, paddle boarding, etc. and wanted our love for nature and the outdoors to be represented in our home. We wanted it to feel outdoorsy but not in a mounted-deer-head-on-the-wall kinda way (no judgement if that's your thing, it just isn't ours!). I told her that since we have young kids we need furniture that is durable and easy to wipe down if there's a spill. We also aren't looking to spend a fortune since our little whirlwinds will probably be putting some wear-and-tear on anything we end up purchasing. Katie went to work designing our room.

Now we didn't love everything the first time she sent us the design, so we went back and forth a few times until we got it just right. Katie redid our design as many times as we needed until we were satisfied. Here's how it looks now:

One of our favorite things is that Modsy gives you a 3D rendering of your actual room posted to your dashboard. You know when you're watching Fixer Upper and Joanna Gaines shows the family a 3D rendering of what their home will actually look like? That's exactly what this is, but for YOUR room! All our friends and family that we showed kept commenting "that's so cool!! That's your actual house!!" and they were right--- it was so fun to see!

Here is a screenshot of our 3D rendering. On our dashboard we can click to drag and explore the whole room. It feels like you're really in it!

One of my favorite things about Modsy is that they link everything they put in your room. So if I like one of the items I see, I hover over it with my mouse and these little white dots appear:

I can click on the white dot over the item and it'll link directly to where the item is available online. Like this:

I love the convenience of it.

I'd have to say though, my #1 favorite thing about working with Modsy as opposed to an in-person designer is that there is absolutely no pressure to buy anything. Modsy does get discounts for some furniture pieces through Crate and Barrel, West Elm, Pottery Barn, Wayfair, etc but if I can find a similar item cheaper at HomeGoods/Target/etc., I can just buy it there instead. In fact, that's kind of what we've been doing. We are looking at the example Katie put in, but then shopping at HomeGoods, Kirklands, Target, IKEA, Facebook Marketplace, etc. We will probably buy 1 or 2 of the more expensive items, but otherwise we will just try to find a similar but cheaper version elsewhere.

All in all, I have nothing but good things to say about Modsy! If you are thinking about redecorating a room and are wanting a little help, I highly recommend it. I have a 20% off referral code if you want to give it a shot. I promise you won't regret it! They even offer your full money back if you aren't satisfied, but I don't see that happening. 😀

Today I am linking up with Andrea and Erika for Friday Favorites. Have a great weekend!

  1. Wow, so fun!
We need to step up our decor game, once we put the Christmas decorations away, it looks like we are moving out, haha. We may engage a designer this year to give us a consult and see what we could do. No major renovations required on our main floor, but our upstairs needs some help.

    1. It can be so intimidating and time consuming! Sometimes it's just helpful to have someone guide you towards what you want/need.

  2. That is so cool. I love how you want to be outdoorsy but not a deer head on your wall. This would be great for whenever we move.
